Reinstall the Surface Type Cover driver If shutting down doesn't fix the problem, try reinstalling the driver for your Surface Type Cover. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, and select Device Manager in the results. Expand Keyboards. Right-click Surface Type Cover Filter Device.

  • Following imaging with Windows 10 1903 using Configuration Manager OSD, the Type Cover doesn’t work at all (keyboard, trackpad).
  • When rebooting the machine, the keyboard and trackpad both work when in the BIOS.
  • When imaging the machine, both the keyboard and trackpad work in Windows PE.
  1. Surface Type Cover 4 – keys have a gap Surface Type Cover 3 – keys have NO gap. The images above show you the difference between the old Surface Pro 3 Type Cover with the close keys and the newer Type Cover 4 with the spaced out keys. The overall keyboard is almost exactly the same size, but the Type Cover 4 is a much better typing experience.
  2. Since 2017, numerous Microsoft Surface Pro 4 users face the sudden death of their Type Cover. There are tantalizing hints that the Type Covers went dead upon a Microsoft software update: 'surface type cover filter device' driver disappeared, and the type cover no longer works.

The Surface Pro 3 was imaged and then patched up-to-date and the most recent Surface Pro 3 drivers available from Microsoft were applied, however the issue persisted.

  1. Open Control Panel and navigate to ‘Hardware and Sound’ and then ‘Devices and Printers’.
  2. Select the Surface Type Cover and open the properties for this device. Select the ‘Hardware’ tab on the dialog:
  3. In turn, select each of the device functions shown in the list and click the ‘Properties’ button:
  4. Click the ‘Change Settings’ button, then from the dialog that is shown select ‘Uninstall Device’. If offered the option to delete the driver software for this device, ensure that the checkbox to do so is selected (not all devices offer this option) and click ‘Uninstall’:
  5. Ensure this has been completed for all device functions shown in the list, then close the main properties dialog.
  6. Open the Device Manager for the computer, right-click the computer name at the top and select ‘Scan for Hardware Changes’.
  7. Expand the firmware section within Device Manager. For each of the items shown, right click the item and select ‘Update Driver’. Click ‘Search automatically for updated driver software’ from the dialog that is shown:
Note that if you’ve installed the latest Surface Pro 3 drivers, none of the firmware items shown are likely to be updated, but attempt to update each item. If you’ve not installed the latest drivers, the firmware list may have more generic titles which will be updated as the appropriate firmware is applied.
  8. Repeat the process of updating the driver for each item under the Keyboards section of the Device Manager. Note that even with the most recent driver pack installed, all of these entries on the device I was working on were the generic ‘HID Keyboard Device’. We don’t know which one of the keyboard devices listed is the Type Cover, however when you get to the correct one you’ll that the driver that is installed is listed as ‘Surface Type Cover Filter Device’:
  9. As soon as this driver is installed, the Type Cover should start working again. In my case no reboot was required.

Surface Type Cover Filter Device Not Detected

hi all,
i have a surface pro 3 with a type cover 4 (i got the surface pro4 type cover) running windows 10 and the type cover is no longer being recognized out of the blue.
I have tried many troubleshooting methods, but none have worked so far.
I opened device manager and i noticed the only keyboard category driver i have is the HID Keyboard. Looking in other threads on this issue, it seems i should have a driver for 'Surface Type Cover Filter Device' or for 'Surface Type Cover'
Does anyone know where i can find the driver for the type cover 4?
Troubleshooting steps i already initiated and none of them have worked so far:
* unclicked and reclicked the keyboard many times, while connected to the internet
* did a two button shutdown/reboot
* brought the computer up to date on windows update, did reboots, shutdowns, nothing
* reset the laptop (while maintaining all data) and then installed windows updates again + some more reboots
* installed the latest 'SurfacePro3_Win10_10586_1702002_0.msi' drivers & firmware pack for surface pro3 from Download Surface Pro 3 from Official Microsoft Download Center
* *tried* to install the latest 'SurfacePro4_Win10_15063_1702001_0.msi' drivers & firmware pack for surface pro4 from Download Surface Pro 4 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center but it did not work since i have the surface pro 3
i cannot get the driver to show up anymore, and given that i never uninstalled or deleted it, i don't know what else i can do.
I am traveling and don't have access to a microsoft store to purchase a new keyboard so i am stuck and i would appreciate any help in further troubleshooting or locating the proper driver for the keyboard.
thanks in advance!
